Champagne and Sprinkles

I love layer cakes. Sorta.

I love the way they look when they’re all prettily decorated. And I love the slices sitting on a plate just waiting to be devoured.

And I really enjoy the process of baking them – and ohemgee you guys, cake batter? I mean, is there really anything better? (Maybe cookie dough. Okay, probably cookie dough. Or I guess it’s really a tie.)

Oreo Cake Batter Ice Cream

The BF and I were having one of those late night I-can’t-sleep-so-I’m-going-to-bother-you discussions this week wherein he was complaining about how he feels he’s gotten so out of shape because of his job. If you can audibly roll your eyes, I did. He’s a man. If someone says the word “gym” within a 20 mile radius of him he’ll lose 5 pounds; 10 if he thinks of the gym. It’s a blessing. I, on the other hand, think of the word “cookie” and suddenly my ass doesn’t fit in my jeans any more. I’m pretty sure that’s not a blessing.

Tequila Sunrise Cupcakes

Images are so fuzzy because I was in such a rush before the party started, I'm so sorry!

So this Cupcake party I held was apparently quite the rager. Maybe it was the tupperware tequila shots that did folks in. Maybe. I mean, I had about half the people I invited show up – roughly 40 total, which is impressive for my small apartment. And while nothing was technically broken, my fridge wasn’t working the next morning. It’s a really great story actually, in retrospect, though last weekend I was righteously pissed about the whole thing.

Jack and Coke Cupcakes

This was the first cupcake idea I thought of when I was beginning to plan my cupcake party. Throughout college (sorry Mom!) I {adored} Jack and cokes. I think a lot of that might have something to do with my first college boyfriend being in a heavy metal band and drinking a lot of Jack, I may have wanted to impress him. I mean, I was over a foot shorter than him, studying philosophy and living a hippie lifestyle (I had dredlocks for a very brief period of time that was thankfully never documented) and I wanted to prove that I was not all sunshine, flowers, peace, love and happiness. I had a dark side dammit.

Red Velvet Cake

I have to say, I’m still not quite sure what all the hype is over red velvet cake. I enjoy it, probably as much as the next cupcake, but I just do not understand some of the hubbub. You know what I’m talking about, those people who seem to practically want to throw themselves in front of a bus to convince you that XYZ bakery/cookbook/celebrity chef has THE BEST RED VELVET CAKE/RECIPE EVER. I mean you can practically see them having a relapse, like a crack addict. They start scratching and itching, foaming at the mouth, their eyes start rolling. Oh and don’t even get me started on the debate over cream cheese icing vs. boiled icing. My god, they’ll come to blows.

Roll Out Sugar Cookies

I have been on a quest for the perfect rolled sugar cookies for I don’t know how long. I mean literally years I have been looking for the recipe. I only just realized a few months ago that I was actually on a quest for several varieties of sugar cookies. There’s the perfect roll out and cut sugar cookies that you decorate for Christmas and all those other holidays. There’s the slice and bake sugar cookies for when you’re lazy and need a quick fix, and then there are those ultra soft, slightly pillowy sugar cookies that have the deep, smooth frosting with sprinkles. Can you tell I have spent many hours deep in thought over a cookie? One that we all seem to know from childhood and remember so well. And yet, every time I tried to re-create it, I failed. Well I have finally covered at least one of those recipes.

Pink Lemonade Vodka Pops and Champagne Fizzes

Growing up as a kid making something “from scratch” was a pretty loose term in our household. We made our own birthday cakes “from scratch” with the help of Betty Crocker, every year. In fact I think the first birthday cake that we purchased was a hilariously ironic giant Barbie doll ice cream cake for my 18th birthday (I once almost set one of my few Barbie doll’s hair on fire because I thought that if her hair changed color in sunlight the same would happen if I stuck her head against a light bulb; lesson learned).

Strawberry Cupcakes with Limoncello Buttercream

I dislike fruit. I don’t hate it, but I’m just not the kind of person who is going to get excited about a fresh peach. I like my apples, bananas and grapefruit (oh, how I adore grapefruit!) but that’s about it. However, if you bake these fruits, I will eat them. I will also probably ask for seconds. Blueberry muffins? Sign me up.  Blackberry pie? Yes please! But a hand full of berries or, [gasp!] heaven forbid, a smoothie and I’d rather stick a fork in my eye.

English Pecan Toffee

Oh dear Chitlins, even in the New Year I’m sucking at this holiday post thing! I’m so sorry, I was just so thrilled to have the day off yesterday (what a surprise!) that I spent all day doing nothing (well, except running 6 miles for that pesky half-marathon in March). Otherwise, The BF and I had a lovely and relaxing New Years weekend in Vermont, despite the whole no snow issue.
