Bourbon Chocolate Malt Cupcakes

Oh hai guys! I made more chocolate things. It seems to be all I’ve got on the brain lately. Which is totally weird for me, because I would not call myself a chocoholic by any means. If you name something “death by chocolate” you’ve pretty much guaranteed that I’m not going to try it.

But for whatever reason I’m pulling the ultra-girl card the last month or so and all I can think about is chocolate. And then all I want to do is listen to Jason Mraz and Michael Bublé, curl up in comfy clothes and watch endless episodes of House Hunters International with The BF. Ugh. I’m my own worst nightmare.

Blue Cheese Butternut Squash Pizza (with Bacon!)

Oh hey y’all! How’s it hanging? I made some fall pizza for yunz (name that accent!).

We’ve been having some absolutely gorge fall weather in NYC this year. Easily the nicest, mildest transition from summer into fall we’ve had in the last five years. It is absolutely divine. The evenings have that nice buttery light with a slight crisp in the air, that smells so fresh even in the city. Makes me wish I could just grab it all in a giant hug and squish it.

You don’t get that? Just me? Okay then…..moving on.

Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Apples and Bacon

I don’t know if you remember, but I kinda have this thing where I decide not to cook food in season. So while everyone else is baking lemon loaves and pastel Easter cookies, I’m trying to get one last fling in with my winter veggies. Actually, that’s a total lie, I just really love Brussels sprouts so much that I wanted to make them and I had a brainwave on my way back from the gym that apples and bacon would make them so much better so I went with it. Sue me. I promise to give you some Easter relevant dishes very soon.

Thanksgiving Leftovers Potpie

Welcome back Chitlins! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and have had sufficient time to crawl out of your food coma to attend this lovely Monday morning at the office. Since I’m sure all your refrigerators are bursting to full with a million Tupperware containers of leftovers from Thursday I thought I’d help you out with that.

Pumpkin Scones

I guess by now it should come as no surprise that I love scones. They’re just so dang easy to make: one bowl, one counter, one cookie sheet, viola, 30 minutes later you have perfect fresh scones. And there is nothing better than a fresh scone. No really, I’m serious.

I figured this recipe might also come in handy if you have some leftover pureed pumpkin from all those pumpkin pies you’re making for Thanksgiving next week. Why not make fresh pumpkin scones for the morning after? It’s a very light subtle pumpkin flavor, and you’ll already have all the spices on hand because they’re the exact same ones you put in the pie.

Venison Stew

Last week was a big week of firsts for The BF and I. For starters we successfully acquired a “household” Costco card. On Wednesday of last week, yours truly had finally achieved one of her life’s dreams: to own a Costco card of her own to buy ridiculous amounts of products that no single individual could ever need or use in a reasonable amount of time. Yes, this is true. Do I want four-dozen eggs, five pounds of bacon and a literal sack of flour? No, I don’t. But can I buy it? Absolutely. Will I buy it? The magic eight ball is saying “Chances are high.” I am about to have a very crowded and over stocked apartment, dear friends.

The second big event? Our first ever couples retreat. Yeah, that’s right. We whisked our lovely friends off to the wonderful world of rural Vermont for a weekend of booze and over indulging in food. How did we stock up for this monumental event? A trip to Costco of course, where I purchased $50 of booze that was quickly consumed in one evening. It was a sodden and glorious weekend of communing with nature, board games and a crackling fire.

Banana Gingerbread

I think I may have mentioned once on this site that I adore banana bread. I think I also may have mentioned that I adore baking out of season. Well this recipe came about because I had yet another 50 pounds of frozen bananas in my freezer and I was tired of just plain old banana bread. I was headed on a trip to Vermont for the weekend with The BF and his roommate and thought I would at least attempt to make something that he would eat, and like.

Maybe I should mention this as well, since I don’t think I have. The BF hates sweets. Yeah, I know. Don’t worry, I already checked and he’s not actually an alien, and he had a really good childhood. In fact, his mother is an excellent baker. So this distaste for sweets is a biological thing. His tongue is broken. Or his brain is mis-wired, I don’t know. But that’s okay because I sure as hell eat enough sweets for the both of us.

Cinnamon Walnut Scones

The top layer are the cinnamon walnut scones

The second to last weekend in October was Bucknell’s homecoming. I haven’t gone in a few years, since the majority of the friends I had while in undergrad were older than me (which probably explains the massive influx in weddings I’ve had to attend this year). Even the few years that I have attended, I haven’t really done any of the actual Bucknell sponsored events. The real reason I go is for my friend’s family’s pig roast.

Let me tell you a little something. I’m kind of squeamish when it comes to raw meat. I don’t like touching it, and I don’t particularly care to see what my meat looked like originally before I eat. But I go freaking ape shit for pig roasts. Stick an apple in that bad boys mouth and a skewer up his butt and roast that sucker up. And my friend Kelly’s parents do not mess around when it comes to roasting a pig.

Apple Butter

Let’s talk apple butter. Not a lot of people have heard of it and even fewer know what it is. I will readily admit I have never actually tried or eaten apple butter. I know; it’s scandalous. Growing up my dad used to keep jars of it in our fridge. It was the weird brown condiment at the back of the fridge that no one but Dad ate. Seriously. I don’t think a single living soul in our family ate that “butter” except for him.

Fun fact about fruit butters, there’s a whole heck of a lot of them: apple, plum, pumpkin, etc. I mean at Masker Orchards alone I saw at least six varieties. It’s pretty astonishing.  And to be honest, they all look pretty much the same. Like a sort of brownish mush.

Fresh, Homemade Applesauce

And now back to our regularly scheduled programming. After Monday’s uplifting entry about our poor puppers let’s get back on track with that I had really planned on writing about for the next eternity it seems: apples. Perhaps you will recall that a few weeks ago, in mid-October, I went apple picking out in Warwick, NY for a lovely afternoon and returned with roughly fifteen pounds of apples. This is a rough estimate, but given that I had to force The BF to carry the bag for me because it was too heavy, I’m thinking that estimate is pretty spot on, if not a little low.
